Suits<\/a> fans have been left speechless after realising they were wrong about the meaning of the show’s name.<\/p>\n

It followed college dropout Mike Ross (Patrick J Adams)<\/a> as he tricked his way into a job at New York<\/a> law firm Pearson Hardman, working as the associate to cocky lawyer Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) despite not having a law degree.<\/p>\n

The acclaimed legal drama, which also starred Meghan Markle<\/a>, originally ran for nine seasons between 2011 and 2019<\/a> on the USA Network before becoming a surprise hit on Netflix in 2023.<\/p>\n

However, even though there may be 14 years of Suits – which is still going strong in the form of a recent spin-off<\/a> – viewers have only just learnt the significance of the show’s name.<\/p>\n

The prevailing theory from viewers was that Suits owed its name to the suited and booted characters’ attires. But that is incorrect. It is the shortened version of lawsuit.<\/p>\n

On Instagram, @itssuitsquotes remarked: ‘7 seasons in. Just realised it’s called Suits because they’re lawyers and suit is short for lawsuit, not just because they were suits all the time.’<\/p>\n

The suits they wear, lawsuits and people who work in business are called suits. <\/p>\n<p>‘However, to be fair, the one who came up with the name was Alex Sepiol, the executive at USA Network. Without Alex, #Suits would never have made it to air.’<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/02\/02\/fans-rejoice-iconic-netflix-show-gets-massive-reboot-20212700\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first episode of the eagerly-anticipated Suits LA series<\/a> aired on NBC in the US, introducing viewers to powerful lawyer Ted Black (Stephen Amell), as he battles to keep his firm afloat.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pilotshopworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/SEI_225264751-23ac.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22620044\" alt=\"SUITS -- "Back on the Map" Episode 603 -- Pictured: Meghan Markle as Rachel Zane -- (Photo by: Shane Mahood\/USA Network\/NBCU Photo Bank\/NBCUniversal via Getty Images)\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>The creator revealed the title actually had three meanings (Picture: Shane Mahood\/USA Network\/NBCU Photo Bank\/NBCUniversal via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt and Bryan Greenberg are also in the cast, with <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/11\/20\/iconic-suits-character-officially-returning-new-reboot-22033130\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gabriel set to reprise his role as Harvey Specter<\/a> for a brief cameo.<\/p>\n<p>Despite returning to the courtroom for the new episodes, viewers criticised the spin-off, which currently has a dismal 34% audience score on <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/rotten-tomatoes\/\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, compared to a critics ranking of just 35%.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Was so disappointed! The cast lacked chemistry and the plot was dull,\u2019 Diane M said on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It jumped right into a plot with introducing you to the new city, firm or characters. I\u2019ll try episode 2 but not looking promising.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Q commented: \u2018What an absolute train wreck.
