href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/10\/saturday-night-live-coming-uk-itll-never-work-22886077\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">upcoming UK spin-off<\/a> of <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/saturday-night-live\/\">Saturday Night Live<\/a> a ‘terrible idea’.<\/p>\n<p>John Oliver, 48, did not hold back when asked about the long-running <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/us-news\/\">US<\/a> variety show, which he described as a ‘cult.’<\/p>\n<p>His comments come weeks after it was announced that SNL was <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2021\/12\/10\/british-version-of-saturday-night-live-in-development-at-sky-15752498\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in development at Sky<\/a>, with legendary showrunner Lorne Michaels, 80, attached as executive producer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Late Night With Seth Meyers, Oliver was asked for his perspective on the UK spin-off, and instantly responded: ‘It sounds like a terrible idea.’<\/p>\n<p>Oliver then elaborated why he was predicting disaster for a UK version of Saturday Night Live and said the show was a ‘cult.’<\/p>\n<p>He explained: ‘It\u2019s a cult. I\u2019m trying to not say the word \u2014 it\u2019s a cult. I\u2019m saying that\u2019s the kind of thing a cult leader would make you do. “We stay up all night on Tuesdays, by the way.”‘<\/p>\n<p>The chat show host then explained that intense hours were not necessary to produce quality comedy programming, calling SNL an ‘outlier’ in that regard.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver continued: ‘It doesn\u2019t have to be dictated to the day that you must not sleep on that day Polk\/Shutterstock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last month, Saturday Night Live came under fire over a parody sketch of The White Lotus. <\/p>\n<p>In it, Sarah Sherman played a spoof version of Aimee Lou Wood’s character with oversized prosthetic teeth, which the actress called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/14\/snl-makes-rare-apology-white-lotus-aimee-lou-wood-mean-skit-22903082\/\">\u2018mean and unfunny\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SNL apologised for the April sketch, according to Wood, and Sarah sent her flowers to apologise.<\/p>\n<p>On the red carpet of the Met Gala on Sunday where she wore a black suit-inspired outfit, Wood spoke about her viral Instagram post.<\/p>\n<p>She told Entertainment Tonight: ‘It all got very out of control\u2026 my whole thinking was I could either say something because I saw it and people were angry about it\u2026 and have it be said, and I won\u2019t spiral inwardly, and feel terrible about myself.’<\/p>\n<p>Wood also said that she thought her criticism was ‘really simple and balanced’ but in the media it became that she was ‘crying’ on the street about the sketch.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Saturday Night Live airs on NBC in the US.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Got a
