In Netflix drama You, she lived with a serial killer. But Charlotte Ritchie believes her next TV project is her most important yet.<\/p>\n<p>This month, <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/itv\/\">ITV<\/a> is releasing a new <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/crime-news\/\">crime<\/a> thriller called Code of Silence, which follows a lip-reading sleuth called Alison (Rose Ayling-Ellis) who joins forces with DS Ashleigh Francis (Ritchie) to stop a robbery.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the latest in a series of powerful projects from Ayling-Ellis putting the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community front of centre, having also done so in shows including <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/07\/4-episodes-gripping-thriller-adolescence-creators-finally-available-stream-today-22863183\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reunion<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/doctor-who\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Doctor Who<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong>Metro<\/strong>, Ritchie explained that she’s ‘never been part of a drama like this before’ \u2013 and hopes its legacy ends up being as enduring as the police phenomenon that is Line of Duty.<\/p>\n<p>The actress found her co-star Ayling-Ellis ‘inspiring’ on set, outlining how ‘exciting’ it was to work with the former Strictly Come Dancing winner.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I’d never played a part like Ashleigh, but also I knew that Rose was the lead in the show and I really, really like her, I think she’s really talented. Take shows like <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/happy-valley\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/happy-valley\/\">Happy Valley<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/line-of-duty\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/line-of-duty\/\">Line of Duty<\/a>, for instance \u2013 two examples that have had a monumental influence on the genre.<\/p>\n<p>Ritchie hopes Code of Silence can join this prestigious ilk.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I hope it has a big legacy, and I hope people take to it in the way that they have these other crime dramas,\u2019 she shared.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed out the unique perspective that Alison brings in Code of Silence by \u2018bridging two worlds\u2019, outlining how the drama ‘infuses the story with so much more than can often be the case’.<\/p>\n<p>‘It\u2019s not your straightforward crime drama. (Picture: BBC\/World Productions\/Steffan Hill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Code of Silence, Ayling-Ellis’ character Alison is desperate to prove herself after being recruited as a lip-reader to decipher discreetly-captured conversations between a well-known gang who are planning their next robbery.<\/p>\n<p>In a world in which those with disabilities are still discriminated against, underestimated, and ignored in and outside the workplace, the show represents the struggles the Deaf community faces, from a lack of consideration in everyday interactions to systematic exclusion. <\/p>\n<p>For Ritchie \u2013 who also tried her hand at British Sign Language \u2013 it was an enlightening experience that has made her reconsider how she goes about daily life on and off set. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The world feels so unbelievably fast that there is something really important about taking a moment to check that everybody’s on the same page. Say you’re a hearing person, you could just shout something across the set at somebody, and they might hear it and understand you. Now it feels a little lazy and really indirect. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018There’s something important and lovely about having to stop a person, make sure they’ve seen you, make sure they’ve understood you, and then you carry on.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ritchie expressed her gratitude to Ayling-Ellis, who guided her throughout filming to make the process as smooth as possible for both of them, and also helped her pick up tips on how to make her own actions more accessible.<\/p>\n<p>It could be as simple as not being backlit when speaking to someone so you don\u2019t obscure your face, or making sure crew members lift their heads when speaking \u2013 something she hadn\u2019t noticed until being on the Code of Silence set.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It just felt like people were making more of an effort to make eye contact and say or sign, \u201cGood morning\u201d,’ she recalled.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pilotshopworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SEI_249426866-f914.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23024659\" alt=\"Rose-Ayling Ellis as Alsion in Code of Silence sat on a table meeting with a man\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Ritchie hopes the show has as big an impact as police drama Happy Valley (Picture: ITV)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And for Ayling-Ellis, for whom \u2018intense constant communication can take a toll\u2019, it was making sure that there were \u2018moments to decompress\u2019 for the EastEnders star.<\/p>\n<p>Although this is Ritchie’s first time playing a detective, it\u2019s certainly not her first tango with life-and-death scenarios on TV. <\/p>\n<p>Last month saw the fifth and final season of<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/01\/netflix-series-scores-10-000-000-views-4-days-despite-worst-ending-ever-23009223\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/01\/netflix-series-scores-10-000-000-views-4-days-despite-worst-ending-ever-23009223\/\"> You come out on Netflix,<\/a> in which Ritchie played the wife of serial killer Joe Goldberg, who finally got his just desserts by the end.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"881\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pilotshopworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SEI_224999076-118e.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23024660\" alt=\"A close up of Charlotte Ritchie wearing a dark denim jacket and black shirt\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>She also shared her thoughts on the You season finale (Picture: ITV)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There was a lot of anticipation to find out how the long-running drama would end, but Ritchie was ready for a \u2018mixed response\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I would feel like we were living in a weird simulation if everybody unanimously agreed that that is exactly how it should have ended,\u2019 she joked, before adding her one wish for the ending that never came true. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The only thing I wish, in some ways, is that he could have finally turned the blame on himself. That he could have finally seen himself for who he was, because he’s still blaming everybody else right at the very end. I mean, he even blames the viewers. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The real redemption would have come if he could actually look at himself and be aware of what he’s done for real. But he’ll never do that. He seems completely unable to change.’<\/p>\n<p>In a much happier exploration of ghosts from the past, Ritchie immediately said she would reprise her role as the happily haunted Alison Cooper in <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/01\/26\/ghosts-returning-tv-a-catch-one-year-heartbreaking-finale-22436037\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/01\/26\/ghosts-returning-tv-a-catch-one-year-heartbreaking-finale-22436037\/\">BBC Ghosts<\/a>, which ended in 2023, much to the devastation of fans. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pilotshopworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SEI_201012576-2225.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23024671\" alt=\"Charlotte Ritchie as Alison Cooper in Chosts wearing dungarees, an orange top and a neck brace\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>The actor would reprise her role in Ghosts ‘in a heartbeat’ (Picture: BBC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unlike her co-star<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/22\/kiell-smith-bynoe-id-love-storyline-a-new-ghosts-22748942\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/22\/kiell-smith-bynoe-id-love-storyline-a-new-ghosts-22748942\/\"> Kiell Smith-Bynoe<\/a>, however, who said he would want his character to be possessed by a ghost, Ritchie was a lot less certain about any dream storylines. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I’m sure [the writers] have a million ideas that are left over that never got used. So I would be fascinated to find out what they thought if that were to ever happen. I don’t know if it will, but we can always live in hope,\u2019 she pondered.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a philosophy she\u2019s taking with her to her next role.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There are so many talented writers out there who have these amazing visions for characters, and I just feel lucky if I get to bring those to life.
