A new season of Peaky Blinders is ‘on its way’ three years after it was apparently done for good.

The British period crime drama ran from 2013 until 2022. Set in Birmingham, it starred Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby and followed the exploits of the Peaky Blinders gang following the First World War.

Following significant speculation, it was confirmed last year a movie was in development, with creator Steven Knight previously teasing it would be an ‘explosive chapter’ in the story with ‘no holds barred’.

When speaking about the movie in February, he also teased the door had been left open for the story to continue.

‘I think we’ve got the best British actors in one place…no-one will be disappointed. It’s a very fitting way to end this part of the Peaky story,’ he said on BBC Breakfast, explaining his wording was done ‘deliberately’.

‘It’s not over. Let’s just put it that way. I’m not allowed to announce it, but I’m just saying that the world of Peaky will continue,’ he added.

It’s now been reported that a new series set in the 1950s is ‘due to start filming this summer’.

The Sun has claimed BBC bosses ‘want the episodes ready to air next year to capitalise on a renewed wave of interest expected after the release of a Peaky Blinders feature film later this year.’

‘The sixth series of Peaky Blinders was supposed to be the last and the movie was meant to be the final farewell for the story,’ a source told the publication.

‘But show boss Steven Knight couldn’t resist coming back to the story — his most famous creation — and he’s been dropping hints he wanted to return to do more.

‘But the fact that it’s been officially green-lit by the Beeb and wheels are in motion on pre- production will be a huge thrill to fans of the show, which was a huge hit for the BBC.’

The BBC declined to comment.

The upcoming Peaky Blinders movie is set during the Second World War, while it’s believed the new TV series would take place in the 1950s.

The show could also see Cillian return, but this time as a ‘father figure’ to younger gang members.

Many previously the movie could mark the final chapter for Peaky Blinders on screen before Knight’s comments two months ago.

After the upcoming movie was announced, Cillian also shared: ‘It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me.

‘It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.’

Peaky Blinders is streaming on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
